Deal: £79 Avoca 8in tablet

Avocat with a "t" means lawyer or the fruit "Avocado" in French. Without the extra t, it is a new brand that specializes in tables and is currently being showcased at Carphone Warehouse where one can pick the STB8098 for £79. The Avoca 8 8GB Wi-Fi tablet, as CPW coins it, is essentially a cheaper alternative to the Apple iPad Mini tablet.

And for most part, it succeeds, at least on paper in matching Apple's diminutive rival. It offers a dual-core Rockchip RK3066 system-on-chip clocked at 1.5GHz, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, 1GB of RAM, 8GB onboard storage, an 8in display with a 1,024 x 768 pixel display, a 4,000mAh battery, Wi-Fi, a 2-megapixel rear camera, a VGA front facing one, a microSD card slot and a HDMI port as well.

The Avoca is one of a growing armada of cheap and capable tablets with the likes of the Archos 80 Cobalt or the Acer Iconia B1 being the better known players. Expect many more to come to the fore and push the quality of entry price tablets even higher.
