IP EXPO 2013: Rackspace, DataStax join new initiative to support high-growth UK startups

A new programme aiming to give early-stage ventures the cloud, software, and data stack resources they need to rapidly scale has launched at IP EXPO 2013.

Tech City mentor and Flying Binary CEO Jacqui Taylor announced the initiative at a special event in the IP EXPO Futures Den, the exhibition's dedicated startup zone.

The first element of the programme - provisionally dubbed Tech Britain - will see a partnership with Rackspace help startups to boost their cloud architecture.

"We're going to give you a cloud stack, cloud resources, and dev panels – everything you need to build a cloud infrastructure. If you can't build what you need to build on that, you're doing it wrong," Taylor said.

In addition, the initiative will also work closely with big data software specialist DataStax, which will be offering selected startups the opportunity to make use of its enterprise class version of Apache Cassandra's NoSQL database for free.

Taylor added: "The key issue is: I build something in my garage [or] pulling down open source, and one day somebody signs me up with 10,000 customers and I've got a problem. What do you do when you need to scale beyond your wildest imagination?"

"What [the DataStax partnership] will do is allow startups to start with one node and scale up the day you get the phone call from Bloomberg."

To be eligible, companies must have received less than $20 million (£12.4m) in funding to date. Interested parties are asked to have an architecture representative enquire about the new programme via:

"It's very exciting for the Futures Den to be getting a world exclusive on a major new initiative in the UK," commented Rose Ross, founder of the Tech Trailblazers enterprise startup awards - the main sponsor of the IP EXPO Futures Den.
