In early August, Kingston released a limited edition SSD in collaboration with gaming team Natus Vincere. We tested the 240 GB SSD version.
The Natus Vincere crew are a force to be reckoned with. The eSports team has several world championships under its belt and earned a total of more than $2.5 million (£1.5 million). Hardware manufacturers regularly use the names and even expertise of gaming heroes to give their products a unique look or special features. OCZ, ASRock, Zalman, Creative and ABIT have products made together with Fatal1ty, and MSI has an extensive partnership with gaming team Fnatic. Whether this increases sales is difficult to say, but for us the performance and quality of the products matters much more than a name on a box.
When you open the black and yellow Kingston HyperX Navi Limited Edition 240 GB you'll see the popular LSI SandForce SF-2281 controller. It's been more than two and a half years now, and Kingston is very familiar with the controller, having used it in the HyperX and V300 SSDs. Both the 120 GB and the 240 GB model have a maximum indicated read speed of 555 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 510 MB/s. Don't forget than the SandForce controller employs compression tricks, which means that those speeds are only possible with compressible data.
Unlike many other SSD manufacturers Kingston gives an indication of the minimum amount of writes the SSD is able to handle. For the 240 GB model we tested that's 192 TB. That translates to 750 p/e-cycles for all flashchips, and that's a bit meagre. However, thanks to its data compression and de-duplication, the SandForce controller is known for its very low write amplification factor, but still. More than likely the true lifespan is much longer than indicated by Kingston.
The HyperX Navi Limited Edition 240 GB is available for £149, which is about £0.52 per GB. It's about the same price as the Kingston HyperX 3K 240 GB, the SSD which the Navi Limited Edition is likely based on.
