IBM is teaming up with Nvidia to develop supercomputing systems and servers that combine the expertise that each one holds in its respective field to assist corporate data centres with GPU-enabled supercomputers.
At the heart of the partnership is the plan to use graphics processing units [GPUs] to power IBM enterprise software applications on IBM Power processors and help develop the next wave of supercomputing systems.
"Companies are looking for new and more efficient ways to drive business value from Big Data and analytics," said Tom Rosamilia, senior VP, IBM Systems & Technology Group and Integrated Supply Chain. "The combination of IBM and NVIDIA processor technologies can provide clients with an advanced and efficient foundation to achieve this goal."
The partnership will see GPUs used to perform non-graphical parallel processing tasks in and give IBM customers the chance to process information more quickly and securely than before.
Each machine built by the two will use the new Nvidia Tesla K40 GPU in conjunction with IBM Power8 central processing units [CPUs], Nvidia’s new chip possessing twice as much memory as its predecessor and a 40 per cent boost in performance making it the highest performing accelerator chip ever built by the firm.
"This partnership will bring supercomputer performance to the corporate data center, expanding the use of GPU accelerators well beyond the traditional supercomputing and technical computing markets," said Ian Buck, vice president of Accelerated Computing at NVIDIA. "It will also provide existing supercomputing and high performance computing customers with new choices and technologies to build powerful, energy-efficient systems that drive innovation and scientific discovery."
IBM and Nvidia’s tie-up has a strong focus on helping technical and scientific communities to power various tasks including decoding the human genome, space exploration and speeding up the introduction of new products.
