UK local government use of mobile working solutions encourages better resource utilisation as well as improves staff productivity according to new research with the biggest remaining remains user acceptance.
The survey, carried out by TotalMobile, sought to show the drivers for mobile working adoption in UK local government with 80 per cent of those questioned agreeing that it encourages better use of resources.
60 per cent of the respondents said that it provides an increased in staff productivity with 63 per cent stating that mobile working contributed to more accurate and up-to-date records. 53 per cent reported that it streamlined businesses processes with 47 per cent of the belief that it increased efficiency savings.
Even with these factors being mentioned there is still a struggle to get local governments to adopt mobile working solutions with 40 per cent of respondents stating that user adoption is a major barrier to implementation.
“However good a technology purports to be and whatever benefits it promises to deliver, without user acceptance it will always struggle and mobile working is no different,” said Colin Reid, Chief Executive, TotalMobile. “Mobile working solutions must be designed with the end-user in mind, intuitive, easy-to-use and adding value from day one. If using the technology feels like a chore then people won’t use it, it’s a simple as that, no matter what the potential benefits to local government.”
Mobile working is most popular amongst the repairs and maintenance departments of local government with 63 per cent adopting it with adult services and housing officers next up, both on 33 per cent, and lastly both gas servicing and highways on 30 per cent.
In order to gauge the success of mobile working systems the most common way of doing so is using key performance indicator analysis [73 per cent] with the next highest method by evaluating jobs/visits, which was done by 57 per cent of respondents.
