BT has started testing new Internet of Things [IoT] technology from Neul that could eventually allow items in the home to ‘talk’ to each other.
The NeulNET solution allows machine-to-machine [M2M] communications using “white space” technology and it is currently undergoing initial technology assessments at BT.
“The Internet of Things market has huge potential, but existing short-range and cellular networking technologies are unable to meet the requirements of many applications we see. A networking technology that can provide deep indoor coverage, last for many years from a single battery, is simple to use, and comes at the right price point is essential for realizing the true potential of the IoT,” comments Mark Harrop, Director of Mobile Strategy and Wireless Cities Programme Lead at BT.
BT’s testing involves sending traffic information to and from moving vehicles using “white space” in frequency bands that are currently used for digital TV broadcasts.
NeulNET is programmed to operate in licensed and unlicensed spectrum and works across a variety of frequencies so that it is accessible to any company that decides to test and then implement it.
“Until now, network operators couldn’t provide a data communications service to deliver on this promise. Our NeulNET system offers service providers a comprehensive solution, enabling them to grow their revenues by capitalizing on the Internet of Things opportunity,” stated Stan Bolan, CEO at Neul.
The NeulNET system works using a base station and a number of terminals. The base station, which can be mounted on a variety of pieces of street furniture, only needs power-over-Ethernet, IP backhaul and an antenna to provide coverage over up to a 5km cell radius.
The terminal, meanwhile, includes Neul’s Iceni RF transceiver chip and needs just two AA batteries and an antenna to function with the batteries lasting for as long 10 to 15 years and they can be placed underground or within buildings.
There will be further announcements regarding deployment of NeulNET technology as the year goes on and it further backs up the IoT sector that Gartner projects will reach 26 billion units by 2020.
