Mozilla launches beta version of Firefox for Windows 8

Mozilla has released a beta version of its Firefox browser that is optimised for the touch-screen interface on Windows 8.

Firefox for Windows 8 Touch Beta sports a new tile-based start screen, offering one-tap access to Top Sites, Bookmarks, and History, as well as classic features like the Awesome Bar.

According to Mozilla, who delayed the browser last September, those giant tiles make browsing "a more visually rich experience," which helps to simplify auto-complete and search.

The beta also comes with the familiar pinch-to-zoom and one-touch swipe gestures, as well as Full, Snapped, and Fill views, which let the user decide whether to view an app full screen, or "snapped" to the side of the display. And, if you're feeling adventurous, you can "fill" the remaining space with another app.

If you find a website you want to share with friends, you can do so directly from the browser or any installed social networks, including Facebook and Twitter.

Firefox for Windows 8 Touch Beta is available now to download; testers are asked to provide feedback to help Mozilla make final tweaks before a stable version of the browser launches. Just remember to make sure that Firefox Beta is your Windows 8 default browser before diving in.

Windows 8 users can visit the Start screen to locate the Firefox tile; those using Windows 8.1 must find the tile in the All Apps Screen, then pin it to the home screen.

Mozilla has quite a few irons on the fire, having just launched a new version of Firefox Sync on the Nightly release channel, which is intended to simplify the process of synchronising Firefox bookmarks, history, passwords, add-ons, and open tabs.

It also gave a sneak peek of the upcoming Firefox Launcher for Android—optimised to offer a more personalised and customisable web experience for Android users.

Meanwhile, Firefox 27 is now available. The new version builds on the browser's unique Social API, allowing users to run plugins for more than one social network at a time. The updated service also enhances security by adding Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.1 and TLS 1.2.
