Acer has taken the wraps off a pair of new Android smartphones it will be showcasing at next week’s MWC, the Liquid E3 (pictured above) and the Liquid Z4.
Both will be pitched at the more wallet-friendly end of the market, with the Liquid E3 being the more expensive model. It’s a 4.7in handset with what Acer describes as a “sleek” unibody chassis (8.9mm thick), and it has a curved design to make the phone more comfortable to hold.
This handset’s target market is the smartphone photo enthusiast, as it has a 13-megapixel rear snapper that boasts ultra-fast focusing and, Acer claims, “brilliant” low-light performance. Traditionally, this is the area in which smartphone cameras are weakest, so that’s a big claim – and it’ll be interesting to test it when we get a handset for review.
There’s also a 2-megapixel front-facer with a front LED flash to entice lovers of selfies (you know who you are).
Other specs include a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 4GB of storage which is a little thin on the ground. Still, as we mentioned, this is a lower-end Android model and is set to retail at 199 Euros (£164). The UK price is still to be confirmed.
The Liquid Z4 is cheaper yet at 99 Euros (£81). It’s a compact handset with a 4in display, and again Acer stresses its photographic capabilities, with a “best in class” 5-megapixel camera that has auto-focus and an LED flash.
The Z4 will be powered by a 1.3GHz dual-core CPU, and again will have a storage capacity of 4GB.
Ease of use will be a priority, too, with an Easy Mode for simple smartphone operation, and a Basic Mode that has set calling and text functions for youngsters.
The Acer Liquid UI has also been revamped on both phones, with fresh icon designs and a new overall look – plus convenient app multitasking via a system called AcerFloat.
Both phones will run Android 4.2.2 upon their release in April, with an upgrade to KitKat 4.4 promised for the Liquid E3 later in the year. If you fancy a sneak peek at the Liquid E3, then check out the video below from Three which shows the front-facing camera in action (the network has the exclusive on the E3, and will be stocking the Z4 also).
We recently reviewed the Acer Liquid S2 and rather liked it, so hopefully Acer will stay on the right track with these next Liquid models.
