MWC 2014: Samsung unveils Galaxy S5 complete with heart rate and fingerprint scanners

Samsung has finally unveiled its new Galaxy S5 smartphone at a bustling Unpacked event at the Mobile World Congress 2014 conference in Barcelona.

Its headline feature is a new 16-megapixel camera with a new menu and redesigned camera UI and new health and fitness features aimed at expanding on the burgeoning fitness market among smartphone users.

“We’ve decided to go back to basics with the Galaxy S5 and focus on the features and things that matter the most to our customers – namely the camera, ability to view and download data and content quickly and their health and wellbeing,” said Simon Stanford, Vice President of IT & Mobile division, Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland. “People want a smartphone that enhances and enables their mobile life. The Galaxy S5 represents just that, and we’re excited to see the response to our latest flagship smartphone device.”

It has a 5.1in Super AMOLED 1,920 x 1,080 screen and is powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core processor supplemented by 2GB of RAM with 16GB or 32GB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 128GB, and it runs on Google Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

As mentioned above it has a 16-megapixel lens that Samsung claims has the “world’s fastest autofocus speed up to 0.3 seconds,” advanced High Dynamic Range [HDR] and selective focus that all means a better camera experience. The front camera, meanwhile, has a 2-megapixel lens.

S Health 3.0, which is included as standard, provides a personal fitness tracker that takes advantage of the onboard pedometer and heart-rate monitor in order to produce diet and exercise records. This is also designed to work together with third party apps and the next generation of Gear wearables products, such as the Gear Fit that was also unveiled at the same event.

Connectivity-wise it promises to offer faster data speeds through its Download Booster Wi-Fi technology that bonds Wi-Fi and LTE in order to boost data speeds, and the device supports fifth generation Wi-Fi 802.11ac as well as 2X2 MiMo.

Security is boosted by the presence of a biometric fingerprint scanner that can lock and unlock the device as well as provide a “safe mobile payment experience.” In addition the Galaxy S5 is IP67 dust and water resistant, and a 2,800mAh battery powers the whole show.

The Galaxy S5, which is available in Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold, will go on sale globally from April.
