UPDATE: All issues have now been resolved according to Google (as of 18:44 for Sheets, and 19:28 for the other services).
It seems there are some major gremlins crawling around in Google’s works today, with a number of its services going flaky for some users.
Three services – Google Talk, and also video chat service Hangouts, and online spreadsheet app Sheets, have all been hit by disruption, the Register spotted.
Apparently Talk and Hangouts were the first to get attacked by the gremlins. Currently, Google says it’s continuing to investigate both the Hangouts and Talk disruption, which is apparently ongoing, and Google promises that it will provide an update imminently.
As for Sheets, 40 minutes ago, Google posted: “Google Sheets service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.”
We’ve been using Sheets this afternoon, and we did hit problems at just before 16:00. Our spreadsheets were all still there, but marked offline, and we couldn’t make any changes to them. This state of affairs lasted for around 45 minutes, before normal service was resumed.
The Register notes that Google is currently upgrading its storage engine, so that could be the root cause of all this – or potentially a substantial uptick in traffic following the reduced subscription costs Google Drive saw introduced last week. We’d bet the former…
