As the famous saying goes: "All that glitters is not gold – but at the very least it might be a Samsung Galaxy S5."
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is receiving a rather glitzy makeover courtesy of Vodafone UK, which will stock the handset exclusively at its stores in gold. First unveiled at MWC 2014 in Barcelona, the S5 is one of the most eagerly anticipated handsets of the year so far with Samsung boasting that aesthetics were key to the design process.
"I think design is still one of the most important purchase decision-makers that we hear from our consumers," said Samsung Mobile's head of IM strategy and mobile product marketing, James White. "We've focussed on a 'modern glam' look for our design inspiration for the new Galaxy S5. That's represented in the four colours we've got available, as well as the introduction of texture."
Despite that, in our hands-on with the S5 at MWC we were less than impressed with the 140g "glam" body. Even with the texturing effect, the back felt plasticky and therefore cheaper than it deserves.
However, we fell in love with its 5.1in screen, whose custom image chip dynamically adjusts the colour gamut and contrast based on ambient light. A 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor and 2GB of RAM means the S5 can proudly pin the "powerhouse" moniker to its chest, and a 16-megapixel front camera should have budding photographers grinning even wider than their subjects.
So if you want to get your hands on the gold version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 it will be available for pre-order (alongside its three other white, black and blue colour variants) from 28 March.
