Today marks the official launch of Samsung's new flagship phone, the Galaxy S5, which is now available to purchase in the UK, and across the world (though the device went on sale early in Samsung's home country – at the end of last month in fact, giving some South Koreans a head-start on the rest of us).
The S5 is now out in 125 territories across the globe, to be precise, and it's launching alongside the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit smartwatches.
JK Shin, CEO and President of the IT & Mobile arm at Samsung, commented: "The refined design and technological innovation of our new Galaxy S5 and Samsung Gear devices are the direct result of Samsung listening carefully to what consumers wanted in the next generation of mobile technology."
And indeed that isn't just press release blather, as Samsung does appeared to have listened to feedback on the Galaxy S4. Most notably the S5 isn't stuffed with a million-and-one odd features, instead having a tighter focus on a smaller number of new additions which are genuinely useful.
Perhaps the best example of this is the Ultra Power Saving Mode, which uses some really clever tech to enable the phone to run in a cut-back mode that can make the last 10 per cent of battery charge last for over 60 hours on standby (see: How does the Samsung Galaxy S5's superb Ultra Power Saving Mode work).
Our review is underway and will arrive imminently, but generally speaking, the reviews thus far are universally glowing, with only minor criticisms such as the camera's performance in low-light conditions. And of course, some folks are still not so impressed with the plastic chassis.
Checking out the online prices for the Galaxy S5 off-contract, Carphone Warehouse has the handset for £570 (but with a trade-in offer giving you the value of your old handset plus £100), and Phones 4u for £560 (as of the time of writing). Clove and Handtec have it priced at £522, but stock isn't available at either of those right now (Clove says stock has been delayed, and is expected next week).
We've a feeling this smartphone is going to be a wee bit popular...
