Yahoo gives iPhone mail app a rethink

Sure, you probably already have apps on your phone that let you search the web, find sports scores, follow stocks, and look up the forecast. But now all this information is coming together in one handy app you may already click on multiple times a day — Yahoo Mail.

Marissa Mayer and Co. on Tuesday unveiled a new version of their Yahoo Mail app for iPhone and iPod touch devices, complete with new sections for news and other information.

Version 3.0 is rolling out in the App Store to U.S. over the next few weeks.

"We've designed it with a focus on simplicity: it's the familiar Yahoo Mail experience, plus one-tap access to personalized, real-time information," Yahoo Mail Senior Product Manager Andrew Molyneux wrote in a blog post Tuesday.

When you open the revamped app, you'll see your inbox along with a new panel of icons at the bottom of the screen. Tap the News icon for a "personalized, visually rich news stream," featuring everything from the latest celebrity gossip to political happenings.

The Today icon, meanwhile, offers up a "snapshot of the information you care about most every day" such as stock quotes, sports scores, more news, and the weather. You can also search the web right from the Today section, so you don't have to exit the app and open a different one to get a simple question answered.

The Yahoo Mail app is available for download in the App Store.
