Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini pops up on the web

While nothing has been announced thus far, rumours have been swirling around about the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini for a while – but now we have official confirmation, at least in the form of the compact handset appearing on Samsung's Finnish site.

Let's face it, we all knew the S5 Mini was coming anyway – every smartphone manufacturer milks the big models with compact editions, and sometimes supersized versions, too – but it's good to see that the S5's little sibling is real.

The web page was spotted by GSM Arena, and it shows the SM-G800 model, which is the model name for the S5 Mini. Sadly, the page is simply a placeholder which says absolutely nothing about specs, or anything else useful.

The rumour mill currently has the S5 Mini packing a 4.5in 720p display, and a Snapdragon 400 chip – it will also carry over the dust and water-resistance as seen on the flagship Galaxy S5. And the handset will, of course, have a more wallet-friendly price tag.

However, the little S5 will have to be priced much more competitively than its predecessor, the S4 Mini. These days, it will have to battle against handsets such as the Moto G, which offers a 4.5in 720p screen at around the £150 mark – or indeed Motorola's new upcoming budget launch (which may or may not be called the Moto E, and could offer better value for money still).

If the rumoured specs are correct, we suspect that Samsung is going to come off worse for wear when the S5 Mini is stacked up against smartphones such as these.
