Fans of Activision's hugely successful first-person shooter (FPS) won't have to wait long for the next instalment.
A trailer has been released revealing Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare with the same unrestrained ferocity as someone charging into your study and letting off a firey cannonade of smoke while beating their chest in an adolescent war cry.
Playing off Treyarch's Black Ops 2 that was set in the year 2025, Advanced Warfare looks to plunge the player into a not-too-distant future where exoskeleton suits, hover bikes and a CGI Kevin Spacey are the daily norm. The House of Cards star appears to be the game's main antagonist, leading a private military company that has turned its back on the United States.
The official trailer confirms that the game will officially launch on 4 November 2014, and while no consoles have been officially announced, the featured footage was captured on an Xbox One. Still, it is practically a given that the next Call of Duty game will be released on PC and PlayStation 4 – what is unclear is whether it will also arrive on previous gen consoles like the Xbox 360.
In a blurb released with the trailer, Activision said: "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare envisions battlegrounds of the future, where both technology and tactic have evolved to usher in a new era of combat for the franchise."
The issue of constantly reinventing a game series that has been dominating the charts since its inception as a World War II FPS in 2003 has been hotly debated. Time will tell whether this latest title can innovate and stand up to the successes of its predecessors but going by its tagline, "Power changes everything," it has big things planned.
In the meantime, check out this mysterious Activision page that has just sprung up, counting down to an unknown event.
