Huawei has just revealed the Ascend P7 smartphone, which succeeds 2013's Ascend P6. Initial experimentation in the ITProPortal office has produced a series of "groufies" – a wide-angled selfie that the Chinese phone maker is reportedly looking to copyright.
But is there more to the P7 than mere vanity gadgets? Let's take a look at the full spec and see how it compares to the HTC One M8.
Display
Huawei has boosted the display size from the P6's 4.7in to 5in with the P7.
The P7 has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, compared to the P6's 1280p x 720p, which is a significant jump in spec, and handy for viewing one's camera creations no doubt. The resolution and screen size match that of the HTC One M8 exactly in fact.
CPU, RAM and Memory
In terms of processing power, the HTC model wins out here, running off a Snapdragon 801 SoC at 2.3GHz. The P7, despite boasting a similar spec and more powerful camera technology, runs at 1.8GHz, allowing for less processing leeway.
Both models have identical RAM capability at 2MB. Also, both are offered at 16GB standard for internal storage, though a 32GB version of the HTC One M8 is available to those who are a bit cloud-shy. The M8 also packs a microSD slot.
Size and weight
With dimensions of 139.8 x 68.8 x 6.5mm, the P7 is a little more compact than its Taiwanese competitor, which is 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4mm. The body depth is perhaps the most significant difference, the P7 being less bulky in the pocket.
The smaller P7 is also lighter than the HTC model, weighing in at 124g to the M8's 160g.
Battery
Only a fractional difference between the two phones here. The P7 and M8 sport 2,500mAh and 2,600mAh batteries, respectively. HTC claims to offer six hours more 3G talk time though.
Cameras
"Groufies" aside, the P7 is a bit of a snap machine. The front and rear cameras offer greater quality than those of the HTC device. The P7 shoots 8-megapixel photos at the front and 13-megapixel photos from the rear. The HTC One M8 comparatively has dual 4-megapixel rear cameras and a 5-megapixel front camera for those so-2013 selfies.
