Less than a year after the launch of the Ascend P6, Huawei has outed its latest flagship, the Ascend P7. The Chinese company, which is a massive force in the telecommunications sector, is desperate to make a similar impact in the smartphone arena.
Many in the industry had already written off Huawei's attempts well before the P7's launch, simply because they feel that the competition is far too strong. One of these rivals is the Samsung Galaxy S5. So how do the devices measure up to each other?
First of all, I think the P7 is far better looking than the S5. Huawei deliberately chose Paris as the location for the phone's unveiling because of its links to the fashion industry, and the P7 instantly became one of the most stylish devices of its kind on the market. The South Korean firm, meanwhile, decided to part ways with the head of its mobile design team, following a constant barrage of criticism.
Immediately striking is the size difference between the two smartphones. the P7 is smaller than the S5 in all dimensions, and weighs a significant 21g less than its counterpart. However, both devices pack 5in Full HD screens, translating into a super-clear 441 pixels per inch. No complaints there whatsoever.
The innards, however, are a different story. Samsung's flagship holds a Snapdragon 805 SoC (or Exynos 6, depending on where you are), clocked at 2.3GHz. The P7, on the other hand, favours the Hisilicon Kirin 910T, of which little is currently known. This is only clocked at 1.8GHZ though, which is a bit of a let down. The P7's 2,500mAh battery is also nothing compared to the S5's 2,800mAh equivalent. Huawei's phone will only deliver up to 14 hours of 3G talk time, whereas Samsung's can go for up to 21 hours.
The S5 comes in 32GB and 64GB models, while the P7 only offers up 16GB of internal storage. However, both models offer expandable memory via a microSD slot and 2GB of RAM. There's no surprises in terms of Bluetooth and 4G connectivity.
The Galaxy S5's 16-megapixel rear camera outguns the Ascend P7's 13-megapixel version, but the latter bites back own when it comes down to the front-facing snapper. Its 8-megapixel beast absolutely dominates the S5's 2.1-megapixel version. If you're a fan of selfies, there's only one winner in this particular department.
