Official Mortal Kombat X trailer released, video game launch imminent

Update 02/06/2014 15:43: The official trailer for Mortal Kombat X has been announced.Watch it here.

The Internet is abuzz with rumours that the tenth instalment in the ground-breaking Mortal Kombat series is set to launch today.

Rapper Wiz Khalifa initially hinted at the news by tweeting "I am #WHOSNEXT," a cryptic message that was swiftly explained by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon. He replied "Yes you are next @wizkhalifa!! On June 2nd Kombat Kontinues.... #WHOSNEXT"

Amazon then let the cat fully out of the bag by listing Mortal Kombat 10 on its UK website, available for PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. The premature listing has since been removed, but not before suggesting that the full release would be on shelves at some time in 2015, although it didn't mention a specific month or quarter.

Regardless, Boon has been teasing his followers for the past couple of months with hints of a big Mortal Kombat announcement. In May he kicked off a mysterious countdown by asking what the square root of 841 is. The answer, 28, takes us exactly 28 days later to today's date, 2 June 2014.

If Mortal Kombat X is announced, it will have to match the roaring success of its bloody 2011 prequel that rebooted the franchise.

In February, Kiefer Sutherland who has worked on the TV series 24 let slip that he had also been working on a new Mortal Kombat game. In July last year a producer on live-action web series Mortal Kombat Legacy said a new Mortal Kombat game was in development, but neither Warner Bros nor series creator NetherRealm studios have officially confirmed this yet.
