UK workers are increasingly abandoning the work-life balance in favour of the work-life blend in a move that is reflected across Europe as a whole.

Samsung’s People-Inspired Security report shows that 75 per cent of the European workers surveyed are work-life blending by carrying out personal tasks inside work time with 77 per cent completing work tasks in personal time. The 1,000 UK workers that took part in the survey are less likely to blend with 65 per cent performing personal tasks in work time and 62 per cent carrying out work tasks in personal time.
“There is increasing demand from people to be able to do more on one device – whether that’s to work remotely or spend time online shopping during their commute - and a clear challenge for businesses to embrace new ways of working but ensure all devices are highly secure and efficient,” stated Graham Long, VP for Samsung UK and Ireland’s enterprise business team.
Amongst the UK workers that are work-life blending, 39 per cent stated that they get more work done in the same time, 34 per cent think it helps them manage personal tasks better and 28 per cent admitted to being less stressed as a result.
Mobile devices are vital for the UK work-life blend and this is shown by the fact that each work-issued smartphone has nine personal apps on it and personal phones have eight work-related apps installed, with 41 per cent using the same smartphone for work and personal life.
Additionally, workers are increasingly using their own technology to get around work limitations with 29 per cent of UK respondents admitting to doing so. This group is known as ‘hired hackers’ and 37 per cent of UK Millennials, those aged between 18 and 34, are members of this category.
There is still a lot of confusion concerning how to make sure mobile devices are secure from an IT point of view and in this sense 36 per cent of UK respondents use personal devices for work even though they don’t know or care if they are allowed to. 67 per cent of UK respondents don’t known whether the company has a mobile security policy and if they do they are unaware of what it covers, and there are even some that actively ignore it.
Samsung’s study covered 4,500 workers across a number of European countries.
