Every 45 seconds, a business in the UK suffers a cyberattack. This is according to a new report from business ISP Beaming, which claims the attack rate has never been higher.

The report states that the number of cyberattacks against organizations in the UK rose 11 percent in Q1 2021, compared to the same period last year. In the first three months of the year, businesses encountered an average of 172,079 attacks each, or 1,912 a day.

During this time, Beaming further claims, cybercriminals used a total of 305,136 unique IP addresses to launch their attacks, 41,923 of which were located in China. Other notable territories include the US (32,843) and India (19,392).

Most of the time, criminals targeted remotely controlled IoT applications and file-sharing services. These attracted 175 and 100 attacks a day, respectively.

For Sonia Blizzard, MD at Beaming, the surge can partially be attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The mass move to home and hybrid working means that company data and IT systems are now being accessed via a wide range of personal equipment on unmanaged domestic internet connections," she said.

"Each offers a potential point of failure for hackers to gain access to company systems over the public internet, and hackers are doubling down to take advantage of vulnerabilities created by this fundamentally less secure way of working."
